Guatemala :(

SO SAD TO HEAR about the volcanic eruption in Guatemala today.

I lived for two months in the beautiful country back in December 2013.
Our tour group spent a night camping on a neighbouring volcano (Acatenango) to the one which eventually erupted. It was a helluva hike (13,000 ft).

I spent a lot of time with a host family while learning Spanish and got to know the people and culture.

The warmth and generosity of the people were a big part of what made that year of backpacking so enjoyable.

Sixty-two people are now confirmed dead with the number expected to rise.

Very sad to see some of the pictures today.

Sure helps put things into perspective.

My thoughts are with the families and those affected.

  1. George and I spent ten glorious days in Guatemala on a medical and home building mission……..we both fell in love with the people and the country. So much so, that we struggled for over a year to find the means to go live as ex-pats…it fell through though. This news is horrifying to us, as that volcano was the home to several families we adored..and we have no means of finding out if they survived.

  2. By coincidence, I’d only a couple of days ago been watching a TV history programme about the eruption of Vesuvius. It’s always sad when people have their lives cut short by natural disaster.
