I’VE BEEN BACK in Ireland for just over two months now.

Weather hasn’t been very agreeable. Aside from that, it’s been good to have some downtime following the completion of my last freelance gig.

I’ve had time to consider the next steps in my career and how much weight to give other interests in my life.

Six months ago, learning Spanish, writing a new novel while marketing my other ones and looking for ways to extend my stay in Colombia were all top of mind considerations.

Now, back in Ireland, my priorities have shifted.

I’ve been working in a freelance capacity (on and off) for four years now. There are many things I enjoy about it:

Remote and freelance roles are on the rise as employers outsource tasks to a global workforce, looking outside the four walls of their office space for specialists in a given field.

Lower cost is often cited as a reason employers consider using a freelancer. Also, not having someone on the payroll means that as a company’s needs change (or are fulfilled) they can dispense with the freelancer. Everyone’s a winner.

However, as demand grows, so too does supply. In fact, it’s getting harder and harder to get gigs without a portfolio of clients, and/or connections to new opportunities.

I’ve got one eye on the traditional job scene in Dublin and Spain. I would plug back into a sales/marketing role comfortably. There is a lot to be said about having a stable, steady gig so you know where the next pay cheque is coming from.

But, my other eye is on improving my own skills – sharpening the saw as Stephen Covey described it in Seven Habits – and searching for complimentary roles which match my strengths.

I’ve been busy revamping my website – less author-y, more freelance-y – to begin showcasing some of the work I do. Previously, I’ve used Linkedin as the de facto platform to highlight my freelance stuff, so this site was long overdue a makeover.

So…does this mean I’ve given up on the writing?

Hell no! I’ve written five books in just over three years. That’s not a bad return! I am about 1/4 of the way through writing the next (as yet untitled) novel. It’s taken a back seat because, well to be blunt, the books don’t pay the bills. They probably never will. I’m fine with that.

Having a regular stream of income again will allow my imagination to frolic and run wild again, without the stress of needing it to pay its way, or support me in any way.

Now, time to get back to it.
